Urban Leaders Fellowship: Regional Director, Multiple Regions

About the Urban Leaders Fellowship (ULF):

At the Urban Leaders Fellowship, we strive to bring in individuals who are already leaders in their own right and accelerate that leadership so they are positioned to influence real and lasting impact in their communities in both the immediate and long-term. Through direct exposure to policy creation alongside elected officials and mission-critical projects with our partner organizations, fellows gain the skills and knowledge needed to further their impact in their current roles in a new career.

The Regional Director (RD) Position:

Founded in 2011, we are heading into its 14th year, and are hiring RDs in the following cities: Atlanta, Denver, Kansas City, Indianapolis, Nashville, New Orleans, Oakland, and Tulsa. We are looking for an individual in each city who is excited to work full-time over the summer (50 hours/week) to manage program operations and oversee the fellows in his/her cohort, as well as flexible, part-time hours in the winter and spring (10 -20 hours/week) to prepare for the program, and directly following the fellowship (10 hours) to close out. Responsibilities include:


Fellowship Management & Operations

  • Identify and secure paying Partner Organizations and support our national team with payments and financial aid process

  • Support Partner Organizations to develop mission-critical projects and with your Elected Leader  to develop the scope and sequence of fellows’ policy projects

  • Support in identification and cultivation of local fundraising opportunities

  • Support in the post-summer advancement of policy including creating a policy transition plans

  • Plan and execute a regional reunion (if applicable) for fellows and alumni of the region

Coaching & Development of Fellows

  • Manage 10-25 fellows over the 7-week fellowship, including: leadership development, cohort culture, and career coaching and policy support (in concert with the Elected/Appointed Official)

  • Customize site-specific programming for fellows including professional development, networking opportunities and opportunities to learn more about the community

  • Administer weekly surveys throughout the fellowship 

  • Participate in RD development through weekly phone calls, ongoing communication, and RD Summit

Recruitment, Selection & Matriculation of Fellows

  • Drive local recruitment of prospective fellows in your region

  • Participate in phone interviews during each our rolling application window to support selection of fellows

  • Lead matriculation of all fellows accepted into your region through email, phone communication, and (if applicable) in-person events

Who We’re Looking For:

We’re looking for individuals who are excited at the prospect of developing leaders and advancing the policy initiatives of visionary elected officials. RDs need strong project management skills and be highly organized; knowledge of policy research, analysis and creation; skills in leading and developing adults; and the ability to create a positive culture to facilitate team and individual development. Applicants must currently live in the city they are applying to, have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and at least three years of professional experience. Past experience with policy, research, creation or implementation is also required. Experience as a ULF alumni or other policy fellowship is preferred. 

Job Details:

The contract starts on January, 1 of the fellowship year and runs through beginning to mid-August of the fellowship or one-week after the completion of the full-time fellowship. Majority of hours are flexible except for the 7 weeks of the fellowship where it’s necessary to be full-time. With COVID-19 health safety guidelines in place, there will be one, in-person Regional Director summit during the spring, which will require travel to a central site. All travel and expenses will be paid for by ULF. 

Regional directors will be paid a stipend of $7,000 ‑ $12,000 for their work. This is dependent on the region’s cohort size, number of partner organizations solidified, and local recruitment/interviews done.
